A Tour of the Top Legal Directories for SEO & AI Search

Published   September 1, 2026

AI search leans on legal directories to recommend lawyers when users type a local query or prompt asking about lawyers.

In addition to Google Business Profile information, which is the most powerful local search asset you can build, eight legal directories appear as mentions or citations in a large portion of AI answers for commercial and transactional legal queries across platforms: Justia, Avvo, FindLaw, Lawyers.com, Martindale-Hubbell, Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, and Nolo. And many rank highly in the organic results for transactional and commercial searches.

The reason is simple when you think about it. Google and LLMs can’t verify a firm’s reputation from the firm’s website alone, so it looks outside for verification, which these directories provide in the form of reviews, recognition, ratings, and information about each attorney’s practice.

In this guide, we’ll review:

  • The free directory listings most worth claiming
  • The invite-only directories with the most to offer
  • Paid directory listings that might fit your budget

Legal Directories Do Four Jobs

Each job below plays a different role in your firm’s visibility for local queries, but it’s easy to focus on just one and miss the rest. It’s no wonder, then, that so many firms overlook the value and power of these directories, and it’s why we find so many neglecting theirs.

They Earn AI Search Citations

When ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview answers a question from searchers asking about local attorneys, they lean heavily on directories. We regularly see AI search results cite Avvo, Justia, Super Lawyers, FindLaw, and several others. Sometimes, the AI search results recommend a specific firm based on its directory rating or reviews.

They Provide Indirect Organic Visibility

Many legal directories rank highly for the searches your prospective clients are running, like “personal injury lawyer in [city],” for example. That cuts two ways. If you’re trying to rank your own website for that same search, you’re competing with those directories for the same spot. But it also means your directory profile can rank on your behalf, since it’s living on a domain that already has the authority to show up near the top of the organic results, even on searches where your website isn’t yet competing.

They Capture Direct Traffic From High-Intent Searchers

Some people skip Google altogether and go straight to a site like Avvo or FindLaw to search for an attorney. It’s similar to how someone might go straight to Amazon instead of searching Google for a product. Those visitors might contact the firm directly using the contact information in the directory listing, and some click straight through to a firm’s website. A strong profile can be a lead source in its own right.

They Anchor Your Firm’s Citations

A citation is any online mention of your firm’s name, address, and phone number, and directories are a common source of them. Keep yours consistent across every directory. Old contact or location information confuses potential clients, and it makes it harder for search engines to confirm you’re a real, reliable presence in your community, which costs you leads and visibility either way.

Directories With Free Listings

Justia

Category Details
Type Free legal information platform (case law, guides) with a lawyer directory built in
Free Tier Yes, and a free profile also lists you in the Cornell Legal Information Institute’s (LII) Lawyer Directory
Paid Tier Yes, two tiers: Gold and Platinum
Profile Type(s) Individual attorney
Reviews & Ratings Native client reviews

About Justia Listings

Justia is as much a legal information resource as it is a directory. Its case law database and legal guides draw lots of independent traffic, and the lawyer directory sits inside that larger platform rather than standing alone the way Avvo’s does. It has native client reviews, but without a rating feature like Avvo.

Free and Paid Tiers

A free Justia profile also gets you into the LII directory, with no extra signup or cost. You can also opt for paid tiers, which offer better placement:

  • Gold: rotating sponsored placement above free listings, traffic statistics, and a profile without competitor ads.
  • Platinum: a fixed top spot on listing pages, but exclusive, with only one attorney per practice-area/metro combination allowed. If it’s taken, you can get on a waitlist.

What Should I Do?

Justia profiles are attorney-level, not organization-level, so make sure each attorney at your firm signs up. Beyond claiming their listing, each attorney should complete their full profile and consider participating in Justia’s Ask A Lawyer community. Only lawyers with claimed, completed profiles are eligible to take part.

How to Claim Your Listing

Justia suggests searching for yourself on the site as the first step in claiming your free listing.

Avvo

Category Details
Type Attorney directory built around a public Q&A forum
Free Tier Yes
Paid Tier Yes (see ProVantage in the Internet Brands section below)
Profile Type(s) Individual attorney
Reviews & Ratings Native client reviews, plus Avvo’s own algorithmic 1-10 attorney rating

About Avvo Listings

Avvo is a directory first, but its signature feature has always been its free public Q&A forum, where attorneys answer real legal questions from the public. That participation, combined with its own algorithmic rating system, is what originally set Avvo apart from a plain listing site.

Native client reviews sit alongside Avvo’s proprietary 1-10 rating, which factors in experience, credentials, and peer endorsements, not just star ratings.

Free and Paid Tiers

The free tier covers a basic profile, Q&A participation, and directory inclusion. The paid tier is ProVantage, which isn’t Avvo-specific. It’s a single enhanced profile syndicated across Avvo, Martindale, Lawyers.com, and Nolo. More on that in the Internet Brands section below.

What Should I Do?

Avvo profiles are attorney-level, so make sure each attorney at your firm signs up. Fill out every field, since Avvo’s rating factors in completeness and credentials, not just reviews. Participate in the Q&A forum regularly, that’s the feature that actually sets Avvo apart. And keep asking clients for reviews after cases close, the same way you would for Google.

How to Claim Your Listing

Use Avvo’s native lookup feature to find your listing and claim it.

FindLaw

Category Details
Type Full legal marketing services company (websites, PPC, content) that also runs a directory
Free Tier Yes
Paid Tier Yes, FindLaw sells its Premium Profile starting around $158/month.
Profile Type(s) Individual & organization
Reviews & Ratings Its own native 1-5 star client reviews (opt-in), plus a Super Lawyers badge displayed separately if the attorney holds that designation

About FindLaw Listings

FindLaw is positioned differently from the rest of this list. It’s less a pure directory and more a full marketing services business that also runs a well-established directory. It runs its own native review system that attorneys can opt into, allowing clients to leave 1-5 star ratings. Separately, a profile can display a Super Lawyers badge if the attorney holds that designation, a visible sign of the Internet Brands network connection covered later in this guide.

Free and Paid Tiers

FindLaw lets you claim a free listing with your name, contact info, practice areas, and a photo. Beyond that, it offers two paid tiers.

  • Premium Profile is an upgraded directory listing with more content, reviews, and analytics. Authority Suite, covered below, bundles the enhanced directory profile.
  • FindLaw’s much larger marketing business is a separate purchase. A word of warning: FindLaw uses a proprietary content management system, which can complicate whether you “own” your website; at the very least, it can make leaving the platform quite difficult.

What Should I Do?

FindLaw supports both organization and individual attorney profiles, so set up an organization profile for your firm and have each attorney at your practice claim their individual listing. Fill both out in their entirety. Claim the free profiles before you consider anything paid.

How to Claim Your Listing

Claiming a listing depends on whether you’re claiming an organizational or individual listing. FindLaw walks through both processes.

Lawyers.com

Category Details
Type Directory on the Internet Brands network
Free Tier Yes
Paid Tier Yes
Profile Type(s) Individual & organization
Reviews & Ratings Shares reviews with parts of the Internet Brands network

About Lawyers.com Listings

Lawyers.com is the most straightforwardly “directory” of the group. It doesn’t have a signature feature like Avvo’s Q&A forum or Martindale’s peer-review rating. It exists as part of the broader Internet Brands network, and it shares its review data with the Avvo and Martindale network rather than running an independent review system.

Free and Paid Tiers

The free tier is worth claiming on its own. There’s no separate Lawyers.com-specific paid product, but it’s part of the ProVantage bundle that covers Avvo, Martindale, and Nolo.

What Should I Do?

Set up your firm’s organization profile, and make sure each attorney sets up their individual profile. Lawyers.com doesn’t have distinct features of its own, so just claim it in the same sitting where you set up Avvo and Martindale. No separate strategy needed here beyond updating your info.

How to Claim Your Listing

Submitting a basic listing on Martindale is the first step in getting a listing on Lawyers.com.

Martindale-Hubbell

Category Details
Type Directory on the Internet Brands network
Free Tier Yes
Paid Tier Yes
Profile Type(s) Individual & organization
Reviews & Ratings Shares reviews with parts of the Internet Brands network

About Martindale-Hubbell Listings

Martindale-Hubbell predates the modern client-review directory model. Its original and still-defining feature is the AV Preeminent® rating, built from confidential peer reviews by other attorneys and judges. Client reviews were added later. Three distinct review types live on the profile: Martindale’s peer reviews, its client reviews, and a pulled-in Avvo Reviews section, a result of the Internet Brands connection.

Free and Paid Tiers

The free tier is worth claiming. The AV Preeminent® rating builds gradually as other attorneys and judges rate you, and there’s no way to shortcut that by paying for ProVantage or anything else.

What Should I Do?

Martindale supports both organization and individual profiles, so set up both. Claim it now, since the AV Preeminent® rating only builds from this point forward. You may also consider reaching out to other attorneys and judges you’ve worked with and asking them to submit a peer review for you on Martindale.

How to Claim Your Listing

Fill out a form to submit a basic profile on the Martindale website (select Submit a Basic Profile), which will also create a listing for Lawyers.com.

Invite-Only Directories

Super Lawyers

Category Details
Type Peer-nominated recognition, not a traditional profile-building directory
Free Tier You cannot pay to be selected. Selection is peer-nominated only
Paid Tier Yes, but only after selection
Profile Type(s) Individual
Reviews & Ratings None, peer-nominated recognition only, no client review feature

About Super Lawyers Listings

Super Lawyers isn’t really a directory in the same sense as the others on this list. It’s closer to a “best of” award. Recognition comes through peer nomination, and there’s purchase path to being named a Super Lawyer. There are no client reviews either. The badge and recognition are the feature.

Attorneys can’t self-nominate, and soliciting or campaigning for a nomination is explicitly against its rules. Nominations come once a year from other attorneys who’ve personally observed the nominee in action, and in-firm nominations only count if matched by an equal or greater number of nominations from outside the firm to prevent gaming the system.

Free and Paid Tiers

Selection can’t be bought. Once selected, an attorney can pay for sponsored ads to boost visibility or gain access through the broader Authority Suite bundle.

What Should I Do?

The rules prohibit asking colleagues to nominate you. Focus on building a network and reputation that gets you nominated organically. Once selected, claim and customize the profile, and decide whether the paid sponsored-ad option is worth it for extra visibility.

How to Nominate an Attorney for Super Lawyers

You’ll have to sign in to your Super Lawyers account and submit your nomination by the deadline, which varies by state. If you don’t have an account, you’ll have to create one first.

Best Lawyers

Category Details
Type Independent peer-review recognition platform, separate from Super Lawyers and the Internet Brands network
Free Tier Recognition itself is free. You cannot pay for inclusion. Anyone can nominate a lawyer, including the lawyer themselves
Paid Tier Yes, but only after recognition. Additional marketing opportunities become available to recognized lawyers
Profile Type(s) Individual attorney, plus firm-level “Law Firm of the Year” awards
Reviews & Ratings None, purely peer-reviewed recognition, no client review feature

About Best Lawyers Listings

Best Lawyers has run the same “Purely Peer Review®” methodology for more than four decades: confidential surveys where practicing attorneys within the same practice area and region evaluate their peers’ professional ability. There are no client reviews. The recognition itself, re-earned through repeated peer surveys over time, is the feature.

Free and Paid Tiers

Being recognized costs nothing and can’t be bought. Once recognized, additional paid marketing opportunities become available.

What Should I Do?

Anyone, including you, can submit a nomination, so a self-nomination is a legitimate first step, unlike Super Lawyers. From there, it comes down to peer evaluations. Once recognized, explore the additional marketing opportunities available to you.

How to Nominate an Attorney for Best Lawyers

Follow the prompts to submit your nomination. If you don’t have an account, you’ll be prompted to create one.

Paid-Only Legal Directories

Nolo stands apart because it doesn’t have a free tier. It requires a paid subscription to create a profile, which comes with other benefits.

Nolo

Category Details
Type Legal publisher (consumer legal guides and articles) with a lawyer directory feature
Free Tier No. Profile access is included with a paid subscription
Paid Tier Yes, available on its own or via ProVantage
Profile Type(s) Organization, though individual lawyers can be listed on the firm’s profile
Reviews & Ratings None

About Nolo Listings

Nolo is fundamentally a publisher of consumer-facing legal guides and articles, with a lawyer directory built in as a paid subscription feature rather than a standalone free listing. A subscription gets you a profile with photos, a firm bio, case history, practice areas, a contact form, and unlimited article publishing under your name.

Free and Paid Tiers

Unlike every directory in the free group above, Nolo has no free tier. A paid subscription is the baseline for a usable profile, whether purchased directly or as part of ProVantage. The Premium tier adds broader exposure across Nolo’s wider network and higher placement in search results within the directory itself. Nolo also offers a pay-per-lead feature, but those leads aren’t exclusive unless you sign up for a premium package.

What Should I Do?

If you decide to pay for a Nolo profile, set up your firm’s organization profile and add your firm’s individual attorneys (remember, Nolo does not provide individual attorney accounts, but individuals can be listed on the organization’s profile).

Since there’s no free tier, decide upfront whether a standalone Nolo subscription or getting it through ProVantage makes more financial sense, especially if you’re also evaluating paid tiers for Avvo, Martindale, and other directories.

How to Sign Up for Nolo

Nolo points those interested in signing up to the Avvo-Martindale LeadDirect page, which explains how the program works.

Are the Paid Tiers Worth It?

We get asked this question a lot, and the answer is unsatisfying: it depends.

If you want the short version, it’s usually no. The exception is a firm with budget to spare and a strong marketing foundation already in place. That means investing in building your Google Business Profile and generating reviews; building a technically sound website with unique, perspective-rich content for each practice area; and claiming your free directory listings for you and your law firm, and making sure your partners and associate attorneys do the same. Otherwise, you’re paying for a promise the directory can’t deliver.

Once that’s in place, decide if it makes sense to invest in the paid directory tiers. A couple of scenarios where it might:

  • You have marketing budget after your website and SEO are solid. Premium tiers can push you to the top of results for anyone searching natively within a directory, or clicking through from a transactional or commercial search (e.g., personal injury lawyer in atlanta).
  • You’re in a highly competitive market or practice area (e.g., personal injury in a major metro). Paid placement is more likely to separate you from the free listings around you here. But again, only if it fits your budget.

One more thing worth considering before you invest. If you’re already investing in marketing, know where your leads are coming from before you invest in another marketing channel. That’s lead attribution, and it’s one of the most important things a good SEO agency should be doing for its clients. Without it, you can’t tell whether your current investment is working, or whether a new one would actually help.

The Internet Brands Network of Legal Directories

If the legal directory field looks crowded, it isn’t. Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Lawyers.com, Nolo, FindLaw, LawInfo, and Super Lawyers belong to Internet Brands. (LawInfo, FindLaw, Abogado, and Super Lawyers were Thomson Reuters properties before Internet Brands acquired them in December 2024.)

The crossover has some benefits for law firms and attorneys. For instance, Avvo reviews can appear on a Martindale profile, and your Super Lawyers badge can appear on your FindLaw profile. Paid bundles provide enhanced features across four or six directories in the network.

ProVantage: A paid product from Martindale-Avvo that gives you one enhanced profile syndicated across four sites at once: Martindale, Avvo, Lawyers.com, and Nolo. It includes a single portal to manage reviews, work toward the AV Preeminent® rating, and acquire peer endorsements, plus performance tracking tools. Pricing isn’t published; it’s sales-contact only.

Authority Suite: A bigger bundle covering six sites total: the four already in ProVantage, plus FindLaw and LawInfo. It includes AI- and SEO-optimized profiles across all six with schema markup and cross-verification tying your credentials together consistently, network performance tracking, and integrated chat on your profiles. A higher tier, Authority Preference, adds prioritized placement specifically on FindLaw, LawInfo, and Avvo, plus AI-driven contact forms.

Justia is the one major legal directory that’s independent of this network, though its free tier automatically extends to the Cornell Legal Information Institute (LII) directory as a related benefit. Best Lawyers is also independent, a separate company entirely from both the Internet Brands network and Super Lawyers, despite the similar peer-review model.

Paid Tiers Outside the Internet Brands Network

Not every paid option runs through Internet Brands. Justia and Best Lawyers are both independent, and each has its own paid tiers.

  • Justia’s paid tiers, Gold and Platinum, are covered earlier in this guide: rotating sponsored placement and a fixed top spot, respectively, sold directly through Justia with no published pricing.
  • Best Lawyers doesn’t sell a paid tier for premium placement. But once an attorney is recognized, Best Lawyers offers additional paid marketing opportunities.

Other Directories Worth a Look

Beyond these eight legal directories, a few more come up in our research and client work. Some are legal-specific, while others are general business directories. But each could surface your firm in search, especially in AI-generated recommendations.

More Legal Directories

A few other legal directories pop up regularly, some with a different take on what a legal directory can be, and may be worth a look depending on your practice.

Directory Description
HG.org A well-known legal directory for 30 years, but it shut down on March 1, 2026. It stopped accepting paid listings and renewals at the end of February 2025.
Abogado.com Geared toward Spanish-speaking searchers. Worth prioritizing if you serve a significant Spanish-speaking client base. It’s part of the Internet Brands network.
National Trial Lawyers Not a traditional legal directory but a membership organization with several tiers, most invitation-only (Top 100, Top 40 Under 40, Specialty Associations), though General Membership is open. Many recipients of the invite-only tiers display the badges on their websites.
DivorceNet A Nolo-affiliated, family-law-specific directory that feeds consumer leads into the Martindale-Nolo lead program.
Just Great Lawyers A smaller directory with a free basic listing and two flat-fee paid tiers. Claims 16,000 monthly searchers.
LawGuru A free legal Q&A platform running for 30 years. Join and answer questions for free to build visibility, similar in spirit to Avvo’s Q&A feature.
LawInfo Part of the Internet Brands network (bundled into Authority Suite). Its Lead Counsel Verification credential is free to obtain if you qualify, but a live, published listing requires payment.
Law Leaderboard A newer, fully automated directory that ranks firms using public Google reviews. Build a strong Google review profile to gain visibility.
Chambers and Partners A research-based ranking built on client and peer interviews, aimed at corporate clients and international commercial firms. Those interested can submit their information for review.
Legal 500 Similar to Chambers, research and submissions feed a tiered ranking, aimed at corporate clients and in-house counsel. Law firms can submit their information for review.

Non-Legal Directories

General directories also show up in some non-Google map results and AI-generated recommendations, alongside many of the legal-specific directories already covered.

Expertise.com deserves a specific callout. It’s one of the highest-visibility directories for lawyers we see, and it rivals, or in some cases exceeds, many of the legal-specific directories covered earlier in this guide. It’s easy to overlook because it’s a general business directory rather than a legal one, but you shouldn’t.

Tips for Claiming & Managing Directory Listings

Before you go directory by directory, a handful of things apply across almost every one of them, worth keeping in mind regardless of which profile you’re setting up:

  • Keep credentials somewhere the firm controls, not an individual attorney’s personal email. If that attorney ever leaves the firm, you don’t want to lose access to your profile.
  • Consider a password service like LastPass to make storing and tracking strong passwords easier, but they come with a fee.
  • Photograph your office. Exterior shots, signage, headshots, a firm bio. These can improve your directory listings’ aesthetics and make you stand out from generic listings with poor or missing photographs or information.
  • Keep a tracker of what’s been claimed, what’s pending, and what’s outdated. Given how many directories this guide covers, a basic spreadsheet noting which profiles exist, their URLs, and when each was last updated makes keeping each listing current much easier.

Keep NAP Consistent

Your name, address, and phone number should be identical across every citation. Inconsistent NAP can confuse potential clients and undercut the benefits of a strong directory presence.

Inconsistent:

  • Doe & Doe, PLLC (Google Business Profile)
  • Doe & Associates, P.L.L.C. (Yelp)
  • Doe and Associations Law Firm (Facebook)

Consistent:

  • Doe & Associates, PLLC (used everywhere)

Update your citations when things change. If your firm moves offices, changes its phone number, or goes through a name change after a merger, update every directory listing, not just your website. Outdated contact information is one of the most common and easiest-to-avoid local SEO mistakes a law firm can make.
